Coming off being online: tips for NGOs

Elena Temicheva, Director of Communications and Strategic Development at the Blagosfer Centre, has been offering advice to employees and clients of NGOs on safety measures that should be put in place prior to people returning to work after the long period of self-isolation. This was discussed at an open virtual breakfast event organised by an NGO PR group.

NGOs will have to introduce new rules to protect their staff in the office post lockdown. These can be written in documents and instructions or discussed at meetings. The main thing is that everyone should be aware of them.

For example, an organisation could alter its working-day arrangements to ensure that staff donā€™t have to travel during the rush hour to get to work or when scheduling meetings in the office. The use of sanitisers, masks and gloves should be mandatory in the workplace, as well as maintaining social distancing. Parcels and letters can be left for a time in a locked room or processed by health workers.

Visitors and philanthropists

Customers should be alerted as to which programmes and projects are still on hold; what the receptionā€™s opening times will be; will there be a particular time during the day when a room is being prepared and will free Personal Protective Equipment be supplied. It is important also that organisations which are temporarily operating a paper-free environment should warn their customers in advance.

Visitors can be informed online via texts and infographics on websites, together with mailings and postings on social media. Additional instructions can be displayed in offices with ads on doors, information obtained from the office manager as well as people putting up posters.

It is also wise to inform partners, philanthropists, volunteers and beneficiaries of any significant changes to an organisationā€™s work programmes post lockdown.
