Russian Federation launches largest social media campaign in 3 years to curb tobacco use

The Russian Federation started 2015 by launching an outdoor anti-tobacco campaign, estimated to be the largest anti-tobacco social media campaign in the country in the last 3 years. It is running on 1000 billboards and 3000 street posters, and is supported by a video.

The Russian Federation has one of the highest adult smoking prevalence rates in the European Region: 39% (according to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in 2010). The Russian Government and health community understand the consequences of smoking for the health of the population and the country’s economy. The Russian Federation has made important changes in its tobacco-control policy in recent years, in line with its obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). This campaign is another example of the the country’s serious efforts to tackle the tobacco epidemic.
